AZASSP September Technical Meeting FY23

  • AZASSP September Technical Meeting
     September 9, 2022
     11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Join us for the first technical meeting of the Chapter year!

Our presenter is: Jochen Gliss with Freeport-McMoRan

The presentation title is: Active shooter vs. Critical incident – is there a difference in response?

Critical incidents have been around for a while. The past 2 years made dealing with these types of events more precarious. Awareness & De-escalation is easier and less cost intense than dealing with the aftermath of an event.

Content discussed will include the following:

  1. Violent incidents in response to feelings of personal injustice are nothing new. These types of events have been recorded since the late 19th century.
  2. What has changed since 2000 is the intent of the assailant, and therefore the response by law enforcement.
  3. Analysis of events over the past 20 years has shown that law enforcement is usually too late to stop an event from happening, they arrive to stop the continuation and limit the number of casualties.
  4. The correct reaction of the individuals in an incident and not the police determines the outcome the event.
  5. The realization that only your own personal actions will ensure your survival are key.
  6. Social media and its status based on “likes”, “shares” and/or “followers” triggers events with the intent to either copy an event or outdo a previous incident.
  7. How has COVID and its mandates impacted our social structures?
  8. What does this change mean for our workforce, especially when forced back into the office?
  9. Only early warning symptom recognition and de-escalation of heated situations will reduce incidents.

Jochen is a resident of Phoenix since August 2000. He is German by birth and American by passport. He served 12 years in the German military before attending Thunderbird, the global management school in Glendale to obtain his international MBA. In 2006 he started working for Phelps Dodge, now Freeport-McMoRan. Since 2009 he has held various positions in the security department, and is currently the head of corporate security.
