Job Title: EH&S Director

Position Overview: We are seeking a seasoned EH&S Director to lead the development and oversight of a robust safety program and remote EH&S teams. In close collaboration with the VP and Regional Managers, you will develop, roll out, and maintain our Safety Culture and Programs, ensuring full alignment with the division’s strategic objectives. This role is integral to managing regional EH&S managers to uphold high-level, consistent operating procedures and site conditions that effectively mitigate risks of injury, occupational disease, and property/equipment damage. Additionally, you will drive the implementation of measures controlling workplace hazards while minimizing financial impact, serving as the primary EH&S champion across all job sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organizational Leadership:
    • Establish and maintain an EH&S-specific organizational chart within budgetary and strategic constraints.
    • Collaborate with executive leadership to set annual EH&S goals and metrics that drive continuous improvement.
  • Program Development & Compliance:
    • Develop, implement, and oversee tailored safety programs—including policies, procedures, and training—that address the unique risks of the division.
    • Ensure subcontractor compliance with EH&S standards that meet both company and customer requirements.
    • Evaluate EH&S needs in support of business growth and resource optimization.
  • Team & Site Management:
    • Lead and support regional EH&S managers in scheduling, preparing, submitting, and reviewing safety plans, forms, and incident investigations.
    • Oversee new employee orientations and ongoing job-specific safety training initiatives.
    • Coordinate regular safety meetings, job audits, worksite observations, and review written safety reports to ensure optimal performance.
  • Data-Driven Safety & Incident Management:
    • Analyze statistical data on near-miss incidents, injuries, and illnesses.
    • Conduct root cause analyses during incident investigations and develop programs to prevent recurrence.
    • Serve as a liaison in worker’s compensation reporting and claims management and facilitate return-to-work programs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Act as a key member of the divisional leadership team, engaging with staff, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders on all EH&S matters.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the VP of EH&S.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) in safety management or a related field.
    • A minimum of 10 years of progressive safety experience in the construction sector, with demonstrated leadership and personnel management.
  • Technical & Regulatory Expertise:
    • Extensive knowledge of OSHA regulations and other applicable safety codes.
    • Proven ability to assess workplace hazards and implement effective mitigation strategies.
    • Experience in heavy industrial construction (manufacturing, pipelines, mining, food & beverage, power, refining).
  • Certifications & Proficiencies:
    • MSHA certification or relevant background.
    • Proficiency in emergency response planning, conducting safety audits, and using safety management software.
    • Certification in First Aid/CPR, and familiarity with risk assessment methodologies such as Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or HAZOP.
    • Strong command of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Communication & Leadership:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective training, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
    • A proven track record of fostering a culture of safety and leading diverse EH&S teams.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and traverse variable terrain (e.g., trenches, excavations, elevated platforms).
  • Capability to lift equipment and materials (1–50 pounds).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with proof of insurability; drivers will be subject to DMV background checks.
