Presentation Title: Using Safety Training to Inspire Change

Presenter: Dr Marilyn Hubner in town for a short stay all the way from Australia!

Abstract: Have you sat through training that tries to inspire change, but ends up putting you to sleep? Have you experienced training that consists of facilitators talking to the boring PowerPoints? Have you spent hours developing a presentation only to find the participants don’t engage? Have you had enough of boring safety training? If the answer is yes then this session is for you!

Safety training is often perceived as boring, repetitive and pointless to the workers and treated as a necessary time waster by the managers seeking to meet legal requirements. The challenge facing those with safety responsibilities is to squeeze the life out of the legal obligations to make training effective. This presentation will introduce the principles of SAFE Training™ that can provide safety professionals with a research supported and simple technique for the development and delivery of safety training programs and sessions.

Learning Outcomes: Relate SAFE Training™ Principles to current training, Recognise areas for improvement in safety training, Understand importance of safety leadership within a training room environment

Topic Relevance: Safety professionals are often tasked with developing and delivering training for their organisations or clients. This session will provide a basic understanding of a research supported and successful training development process that is bounded in safety leadership and educational principles.

From ASSP Health & Safety Summit 2018’s Keynote Speaker Eldeen Pozniak, “After spending more than a decade consulting in training, adult education and safety for large and small organisations across construction, manufacturing, service and utilities industries, Marilyn knows what truly drives effective training and safety performance — and it’s not ticking the legislative compliance box. It’s how well you connect with the heart-beating people you’re trying to educate and communicate your understanding back to them.

A big believer in providing relevant training opportunities, Marilyn encourages organisations to strategically plan training interventions so as to provide for and capture real-time educational needs. Marilyn has designed, developed and delivered training programs across Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, and has spoken at international conferences in Germany, Korea, USA, and Canada. Her passion for improving workplace training and safety behaviour drives her to excel at every opportunity.

In addition to her extensive adult education and training experience, Marilyn is a qualified safety professional with experience in safety systems development, auditing and inspections. Drawing on her many years of experience in adult education, and safety, Marilyn now focuses mainly on designing and developing workplace training systems that encompass a holistic company approach.”
