Speaker: Mike Kleinpeter

Topic Title:  The Right Way – Providing a common definition, setting expectations, and establishing roles and responsibilities for safety in your organization

AbstractThe responsibility for safety in any organization includes more than just safety personnel. Executive management, operations management, and the worker all have roles to play in establishing and maintaining a safe working environment. However, specific roles and responsibilities for each group has not always been understood, and they may not have ever been introduced. This means there may be employees in an organization who do not realize how vital their influence can be towards worker safety. Four groups comprise what can be called the company’s Safety Team. Each component has a specific role and responsibility for safety in their workplace, along with some common responsibilities shared within the Safety Team. It is important for each group of the Safety Team to understand their role and responsibility, as well as the impact they can have on safety. 1. Executive Management 2. Operations Management 3. Worker 4. Safety Personnel Each group must understand and embrace their roles and responsibilities, work synergistically, and consider themselves a safety leader, for the benefit of safety overall. The Right Way provides a common definition, sets expectations, and establishes roles and responsibilities for safety in your organization. Every organization has a moral, if not governmental, obligation to provide a safe and healthy work environment for its workers. The Right Way is a basic, simple foundational definition that can be used with any safety program or process to meet that obligation.

Along the way that job became a career, then a passion. After finding joy and success in mentoring future safety leaders and discovering there was little safety education given to operations leaders, Michael created a safety philosophy that turned in to The Right Way, which teaches both safety and operations leaders their roles and responsibilities for safety. Currently a safety director for a general contractor Michael also speaks to organizations and at conferences on The Right Way.

Michael resides in the Dallas area with his wife and two sports-loving boys.
