ABOUT THIS POSITION
The City of Phoenix Human Resources Department Safety Division has an overall mission to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses for City of Phoenix employees. The HR Safety Division is seeking a high-performing, experienced and skilled professional to fill the position of Industrial Hygienist to perform advanced professional work in support of the City’s Industrial Hygiene Program. The Industrial Hygiene Program is part of a comprehensive safety program which assures that the City of Phoenix provides a safe, healthy workplace for its employees and complies with all current safety and health standards and regulations.
This position exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment and works under the general supervision of the Safety Supervisor.
Duties and responsibilities include
- Performing field studies, inspections, and assessments to identify, evaluate, and control occupational health and safety hazards;
- Conducting industrial hygiene surveys of employees and City operations related to hazardous substances and contaminants, noise, light, and environmental stresses and hazards;
- Working with City departments to provide technical advice and guidance for regulatory compliance requirements and industry best practice recommendations;
- Developing corrective methods, procedures, policies, and programs to enhance the work environment, and foster a positive safety culture; and
- Training personnel in the areas of industrial hygiene and safety.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Will possess. be qualified, or in the process of completing the f years of professional work after graduation requirement to obtain the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations including OSHA, state, and other agencies.
- Strong background in both Safety and Industrial Hygiene principles and practices.
- Ability to work within large organizations and interact with a wide variety of employee groups from field staff to organizational management.
SALARY
Pay Range:$72,966.40 – $118,872.00 annually.
Hiring Range: $72,966.40- $97,780.80 annually.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years of experience in safety, chemistry, or industrial engineering involving industrial hygiene or air pollution.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, industrial engineering or a related physical or biological science.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience in safety training curriculum development and facilitation to small and large groups in virtual, online, and in-person environments.
- Experience in conducting workplace ergonomic evaluations.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) however, an eligible candidate on the pathway toward completion is also acceptable.
- Experience conducting IH sampling using regulatory standards and methods.
- Experience in workplace safety program coordination and oversight including policy creation, training curriculum development and delivery, risk assessment, and general compliance recommendations.
